Something warm for the dark month of February:

Fornax Pizza is cranking up the wood-fired oven!

There is no better way to warm up and be in community than over a shared meal– and what better comfort food than a wood-fired pizza?

This month, I had the honor of helping usher Fornax Pizza into the North Coast community by creating a brand inspired by the goddess of the furnace, the alchemy of sourdough fermentation, and the goodness of locally sourced ingredients.

Jackie’s passion comes through in her brand story, and these carefully crafted pizzas are going to quickly become a staple of our local food scene here on the North Coast. Keep scrolling for some of her Brand Story Highlights!

First, we worked to identify the personality of the brand and the values of the business. Building on these values, we dug a bit deeper into her unique offering.

Here are a few examples of the brand copy we delivered:

Wood Fired

Pizza-making is an ancient art that makes waves through our entire collective memory. Remember the feeling of a warm pizza box on your lap, the smell filling up the car on the way home to enjoy with loved ones?

2,000 years after ancient cultures enjoyed the first wood fired pizza, we all can still connect over the simple joy of handmade dough, melted cheese, and incredible ingredients to top off our favorite meal.

Start a tradition, and share this magic with us.

Wild Fermented

Like life on the coast, our sourdough reflects the rhythms of nature, reminding us that good things take time.

The dough waits for no one, and in its unpredictability lies the magic.

We embrace this process by working slowly and incorporating local ingredients, so our pizzas are rooted in tradition, and unique to the Oregon Coast.

Rooted in Tradition Pizza is best enjoyed in good company– but we believe it should be made in good company, too.

Our Pizza-making process starts with the local farmers, foragers, and producers who call this place home.

Our network of neighbors and friends is wide, interconnected, and a vital part of what makes the Oregon Coast so special. When we cook with local ingredients, our food becomes rooted in place, care, and intention.

What's in a Name?

Fornax Pizza was named for the Roman goddess of the oven, paid homage in a book by Jackie’s baking professor Richard Miscovich.

In it he writes, “I imagine Fornax monitors all the wood fired ovens in the world, and if you pray to her she will come to your aid. If your oven is too hot, she will absorb that energy and take it to underfired bakers who are wishing they had a bit more heat to finish the day’s baking.”

For Jackie, the process of hand-making dough, forging her own fire, and bringing together all these elements in perfect alchemy, is her own kind of magic– and she can’t wait to share it with her Oregon Coast community.

For the logo, we worked with the concept of a pizza oven as a portal, representing the alchemy and magic of the fermentation and baking of all these local ingredients.
